Students are working on "How To" writing and reading. We are working as a team to learn how to be helpful school citizens. The students have completed an environment walk in the school courtyard. We discussed how we can help take care of our play area. Students will continue to read books and learn about the how to writing process. We are still focusing on sentence structure, including: capital letters, finger spaces and end punctuation.
Students will be given the opportunity to develop and create tools that would assist in care taking for the play area. Then, students will write an informative how to book in order to tell others how they can help in our focus to become better and more helpful school citizens.
*Please send in any recyclable items that can be used for our tool project. We always appreciate your help!

Students are working hard as we continue to discuss and learn about non-fiction text. We have been studying endangered animals as part of our Magnet Curriculum. Students will use their research and non-fiction knowledge to create an All About Book. Books will include: animal descriptions, habitat, world location, and why the animal is endangered. Students will be asked to put on their thinking caps to develop conservation suggestions for their chosen animal!
We have begun learning about non-fiction text. Students are practicing:
During out literacy portion of the day, we work extremely hard to build confident and successful readers. In order to enhance their skills, we encourage students to read with someone at home EVERY night: 20 minutes. Without extended help, students cannot retain important reading skills.
During the first few weeks of the school year, our class will focus on the 3 different ways to read a book:
1. read the words
2. read the pictures
3. retell the story
I will also be working closely with your students to identify their reading level and individual needs. As we grow together, students will be grouped with others who have similar abilities. We will work hard ALL year to continue introducing reading strategies.
